On the face of it, providing outpatient healthcare in Eastern Europe paid for by the public sector should be a huge opportunity. It is a huge market and one which often doesn’t provide a particularly good service. As one private equity investor put it to us: “why battle it out in the private sector which covers maybe 5-7% of the market, when you could be addressing the 90% plus of the population who can’t afford it.”
  So is the French clinic sector going to be swallowed by private equity?

The French private hospital sector is the largest in Europe. It is also extremely diverse. We talk to Jean-Loup  , president of the French Federation of Private Hospitals about a sector which the French state reckons achieves an after-tax profit of just 1%.

3i, together with NI Partners, the private equity division of the NATIXIS group, has just purchased 65% of Vedici, whilst January saw Ramsay buy 57% of Proclif. Yet the latest tariff rise for the private sector for MCO (médecine, chirurgie, obstétrique) was zero and, on average, the private sector gets 30% less per procedure than the public. What’s the appeal?
